Yorta Yorta identity inherently stems from a belonging to Country. This connection to Country is bound up with a fundamental responsibility to Yorta Yorta ancestors who have been laid to rest in Yorta Yorta land.
As river people, water is the lifeblood of Yorta Yorta Country. Based upon oral history, ancestral management strategies have been passed down through generations to be used today.
Yorta Yorta Nation continues to be actively involved in cultural heritage and natural resource management and have aspirations to be involved in decisions and conservation operations, on equal footing, in order to sustain their connection and fulfil their inherited obligations to care for Country (Yorta Yorta Whole-of-Country Plan 2021-2030).
This area is and has been cared for by the people and clans of the Yorta Yorta Nation for tens of thousands of years and today is home to a culturally rich and diverse community. There is a strong desire from many people in the community to better understand the rich and inspiring legacy of Aboriginal history and culture unique to the region.
